Scanners; How and Why,
Special and Utilitarian Use, with
Tom Pitre,
"out-going",
Co-President, SPCUG and VP for 2010.
Scanners are under-utilized in the home
environment, and if used in unique ways,
they can be a tool that brings more enjoyment and utilitarian value to your
workspace at home or at work.
Download relevant files from presentation. Click on the LINE containing
the file name
in the directory listing, below, to view/download the file.

Note regarding SEARCHING .pdf files that were scanned. There are two
types of PDF documents – those created by sending Office files, images, etc. to
an Acrobat like PDF printer and those created by scanning physical paper like
pages of a book, legal documents, etc. This method creates an IMAGE, rather than
a searchable "text" file.
Turns out that I never had to deal with documents prepared this way.
I evidently worked with .pdf files as "native" format files that
were created as .pdf files...not IMAGES of .pdf files, or I OCR'd
them first, if necessary. There are some tools that can be
used to convert, if necessary. Adobe Acrobat should work, but
here are some other links if you would like to investigate yourself
I apologize to anyone I led astray.

eBay, Craig's List - buying and selling. - with
Kathy
Mahnerd.
After 25 years of living in Houston, Texas
Kathy and her husband Eric moved to Sequim in September, 2003.
She has been both buying and selling on Ebay since May of 2000.
Back then listing on eBay was time consuming and tedious.
Everything had to be inserted utilizing HTML. Now it's as easy
as creating a word document.
Kathy will show you how to do advanced searches within eBay on
completed auctions ...so that you can get an idea of what your item could actually sell for. Then we'll
upload digital photos or scans of the item to the listing. If
you feel like you'd like to operate your own retail store on the
internet she can show you how to open an eBay store. - km

Thank you,
in .pdf format, of letter from the Sequim
Education Foundation for the
donation from Sequim PC User's Group
From your Co-President
This year, as Co-President of SPCUG, I have dedicated my efforts to
finding and booking speakers and presenters that will bring fresh
and exciting programs and SIGS to our group. As always, we continue
to broaden our interests to include more technological-related
membership meetings.
My new BLOG, sequimtech at:
http://sequimtech.blogspot.com is updated often
and contains links to dozens of free programs for your PC and tips
and tricks for the PC user that may have some problem with their
hardware or software. BLOG posts are also linked to my Twitter site.

As you know, we are a not-for-profit organization under Section 501
( c )(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, dedicated to educating the
community about computer systems, software, and their uses;
providing community service to charities and educational groups –
including Sequim High School, The Future Business Leaders of America
(Sequim High Chapter) The Museum and Arts Center, and The Senior
Center. We donate cash, hardware and technical assistance to the
aforementioned organizations.
Our meetings include socializing, hands-on
workshops, and demonstrations of software/hardware products. Special
meetings – Special Interest Groups (SIGS) are also scheduled
periodically.
We
welcome guests who may be interested in sharing computer experiences
with us. Come to a meeting or two free of charge. Membership in
SPCUG is $20.00 annually for the member and their immediate
family.
Although we primarily support PCs (IBM-compatible computers with the
Windows/DOS operating systems), we also have members using Linux and
Apple systems. Please join us to find out more about who we are and
what we do.
If you’re not already a member, consider becoming one, so that you
can participate with other, like-minded people. Come and enjoy the
excitement and challenge of successfully using a computer system,
software, and ultimately sharing those experiences with others.

Follow up from ON LINE BANKING
presentation of 1/10/2009
- What is the percentage of our customers
that use online banking? 24% of our checking customers currently use
online banking.
- What amount of online history is there?
Our host system only holds 6 months of online history, therefore, that
is all that our online banking can pull. However, if a customer uses
Finance Works which is on a separate server, it holds 18 months of
history. Finance Works is the added feature on our online banking site
for a great budgeting tool.
- What does PFM stand for on the export
feature? PFM stands for Personal
Financial Manager. The system keeps track of when you use the export
function and when you update again, it will only bring in new items. If
you use the date range instead, it may bring in duplicates if you enter
a date that was previously exported out. So, I would recommend using
the PFM.
What is HTTPS?
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a secure version of the
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (http). HTTPS allows secure ecommerce transactions,
such as online banking.
Web
browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox display a padlock icon to
indicate that the website is secure, as it also displays https:// in the address
bar.
When a user connects to a website via HTTPS, the website encrypts the session
with a digital certificate. A user can tell if they are connected to a secure
website if the website URL begins with https:// instead of http://.
Suppose you visit a Web site to view their online
catalog. When you're ready to order, you will be given a Web page order form
with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that starts with https://. When you click
"Send," to send the page back to the catalog retailer, your browser's HTTPS
layer will encrypt it. The acknowledgement you receive from the server will also
travel in encrypted form, arrive with an https:// URL, and be decrypted for you
by your browser's HTTPS sublayer. ##
